Decluttering

After a busy and hectic week, I figured this weekend would be a good one to do some cleaning up and decluttering around the house with the family. Because of the lack of time I seemed to have in my days through the week, there is a lot to catch up on. House cleaning, basic repairs and side projects that I had to neglect through the week should be more than enough to keep me busy for the next couple of days and as I was moving through our home this morning eliminating some of the items on my to-do list, I realized that this weekend would also be a valuable time to do some decluttering within myself.

After following that mindset for a couple of minutes, I concluded that I already began that process earlier this week while reflecting on my gratitude for the family I have and the people in my life. I also thought about my personal flaws and how they get in the way of getting the most out of those relationships.

For instance, I think and worry about the future so much that I miss some awesome things that unfold right in front of me and an example of that would be how much my children have grown this week. We, like all families, have periods when things are rough and in those moments, we expect that as adults, it’s our job to walk our children through those troubled times. This week I have seen those roles reversed with my children looking to lead in various situations and the maturity and intelligence they’ve shown makes me extremely proud of them. Unfortunately, being so wrapped up in my daily life I haven’t noticed that happening until a couple of days ago. So, this type of thinking is one of the first things that I’m looking to throw out or declutter from my life.

God has blessed me with so many wonderful things and my trying to plan or lead my life has kept me from really appreciating those blessings to the fullest. While I continue to worry about the direction that society appears to keep going, my children keep proving to me that there is hope for their futures by amazing me on an everyday basis, my wife keeps me grounded with her love and support, and just looking at those two things alone, I like what I see regarding my future.

Next week I will go back to highlighting area organizations that provide positivity to our community and would still appreciate any suggestions on places or people in the area to highlight. In the meantime, I’m going to keep working on removing the clutter keeping me from truly enjoying my life and letting God lead instead of doing it myself.
