Orange County Transportation Town Hall coming to Apopka this week

9

From the Orange County Newsroom

Each week, nearly 1,000 residents move to Central Florida. This presents challenges in providing proper roads, infrastructure, mass transit, sidewalks, etc.

At the 2019 State of the County, Mayor Demings announced pursuing a transportation sales tax referendum in November 2020.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings

For Phase I of this initiative, Mayor Demings is asking for your input by participating in upcoming community meetings and Transportation surveys. Orange County’s 1.35 million residents have unique transportation needs and priorities depending on where they reside in the County – and we want to hear from you.

Over the next several months, Orange County is holding public workshops to gain input from community stakeholders, learn the priorities of residents, businesses and local leaders, and build towards a long-term solution that works for everyone.

District 2 Orange County Commissioner      Christine Moore

From these community meetings, Orange County will gather feedback and develop a proposed plan to improve transportation in our community. And next week, the Town Hall meeting is in Apopka.

  1. I am not voting in favor of a sales tax increase for Orange County, that is for sure! They need to quit wasting tax payer money. We will get more than enough taxes imposed, without approving it at the voter booth. That is a bunch of crap. I also just realized, when I went to pay our property tax on our home, and used a credit card to pay it, that they don’t just have a standard fee for using a credit card such as, for example, $ 1.50, or maybe $ 2.00 (as an example) NOOOOO, they charge a certain percentage as a credit card transaction fee based on the amount of your tax bill due!!!!! The lady clerk, quoted me a 2. something percent fee. I didn’t catch what the 2. something was, but I said, “you’re kidding”, and she said “NO”, and I said I thought everyone paid the same as a standard transaction fee, like maybe two dollars, for example. “No” she said. She even told me some people with high tax bills, have paid like, a hundred dollars for the credit card transaction fee. A hundred dollars, that is absolute robbery! Pure greed! Look, call me petty, say OK boomer, whatever, but I charge property insurance on my credit card and do not even have to pay a cc transaction fee……I charge our vehicle insurance on our card and don’t pay a fee. This bunch is greedy! Greedy, greedy, greedy. I know if you pay your City of Apopka utility bill, like at Amscot, or Duke Energy power bill, there is a standard credit card fee, maybe even if paying cash, but it is a small fee, the same for everyone, and is not based on the amount of your bill you owe. AS I SAID, this bunch is greedy, and this should not be allowed by a government entity, basing it on the amount of your tax bill! I feel good to get this off my chest. It is not about the about we paid, it is the principle of it all. Did I use the right “principle”…? LOL If this gets posted, it will be a miracle, as my internet service has been really crappy at night, or maybe I will post ten times, just trying to get it to post, as the service keeps going on and off, driving me crazy……

  2. Here is Orange County trying to hike the sales tax…..but did you catch what I happened to see on tv? The City of Groveland, just gave their residents money back! Yes, their mayor, gave each of their residents, money back that they had, what the mayor said, was an overage of the the money collected from their town’s building permits! Do you know how much they got…..???……a whopping, $ 234.00 check in the mail, for each resident in the city!!!! Some of the residents were so stunned, that they got on the phone and called city hall thinking that it was some sort of a scam. The mayor assured them it was not a scam, and was for real! OMG, do you think this would ever, ever happen in Apopka……???? They said it was an overage, and the 1.4 million, could not be used for anything else, so the mayor gave it back to the residents, as an unexpected gift, here at Christmas. I am speechless. We need a mayor like that!!!! What a jolly good soul!

  3. My husband spent the day watching the impeachment and putting up our Christmas lights. Duke Energy sent us an offer to Fix our power bill the same amount for 12 months. So we thought it over and signed up for it. They gave us the set price with all the various taxes added on, and it seems like a bargain so that is what we went for. You can drop it, at the end of 12 months if you want, or it will renew after they review your usage. All I know is burn baby burn, the Christmas lights, the heat, the bulbs, the clothes dryer, the tv, the stove and oven, whatever…….Lol.

  4. Looks like Orange County could use a few lights down lonely old dark Maine St. coming from the AHS. That street is too dark entirely. We were heading to Wawa for gas, and I told my husband that Maine Street is entirely too dark, and there are always people walking around out there. We got gas, and as we headed back down Maine St. I noticed the county fire truck and ambulance along there. I don’t know what happened, but I sure hope no one got hit by a car…..just don’t know what was going on there. I appreciate the new lights the county and the city have put out, along RSR and Park Av. Very nice.

  5. Well, I found out what happened along Maine St. last night. After driving by there today, we saw a yellow crime scene tape around a house and car. The car apparently crashed and wrecked and landed right up against a home there. The black small car was what I would guess to be totaled. It is a miracle it didn’t go through the home. I believe a tree stopped it from going into the home, but the car is longways right against the front of the home. OMG. We had just come by there last night going to Wawa, and coming back toward our home, I saw the fire engine and ambulance, and we were not at Wawa very long, just time to put in some gas.

  6. Drive around look at all the construction of new condos, hotels, apartments, developments and strip malls the impact fees are designed to cover such road work, transportation, schools and other related projects. the property taxes on those buildings and businesses have to be huge. the purpose for tourist taxes (hotel tax) need to be changed to include roads, paths and other projects that bring people/tourist to these businesses, resorts and parks. Also ask the parks to contribute, they build new theme parks all the time….more tourist. Leave my penny on every dollar spent alone. Cut waste in your own areas of government!

    • Absolutely!! The Tourist Development Tax (TDT) should be changed. They (the politicians) always act like the tourist should pay, but then they use the TDT as a political slush fund!

Demings incorrectly promotes the tourists will pay most of the new “Transportation Sales Tax”. That is a bunch of “stuff”. Do the math and see how much more Orange County residents will pay for this. This reminds me of an expression…….”the figures don’t lie, but the liars do figure”. Politician’s projections are never correct…..they say what they think we will swallow…… They expect us to drink their kool-aid.

Last……..CORPORATIONS NEED TO PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE! 99% FL Corporations do not pay any state income tax. THEN THESE POLITICIANS WANT MORE MONEY FROM US! OUTRAGEOUS!! It should also be noted OC is giving $125 million for the new Universal/Comcast park. Universal/Comcast is a $27 BILLION corporation. They should pay for their own road!!!

They speak of adding a lot more lynx buses to help, how often do we now sit behind a bus that stops every block or two, the traffic and pollution they cause is horrible. lynx should add pullovers for every bus stop so traffic can get by as the off load and load. school buses should turn off the main roads to pick up children, safer for kids, less traffic back ups, better for environment less road rage.
