Moore announces funding for phase II septic-to-sewer project, helping residents and Wekiwa Springs

From the Office of Orange County Commissioner Christine Moore, District 2

Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Florida State budget into law today allocating $500,000 for the conversion of 154 residential septic systems to sewer in District 2. This money is part of a larger project which Orange County Commissioner District 2 Christine Moore started in early 2019 to remove aging septic systems, which contribute to pollution of nearby Wekiwa Springs and the Wekiva River.

Phase II of the project is underway with design, surveying, and soil testing taking place. Phase I’s groundbreaking event takes place June 18, 2021 in the subdivision which sits closest to Wekiwa Springs – Sweetwater West. Neighboring Wekiwa Highlands is also included in this project. Between the two, 211 residential septic systems will be converted to sewer in a phased project.

Commissioner Moore said, “I am grateful to state lawmakers for funding this critical process which will stop the closest source of nitrogen from entering our outstanding waterways in District 2.”

The Florida Springs and Aquifer Protection Act requires a focus on reducing the nitrogen load on targeted lots of less than one acre, and where groundwater is the most vulnerable. For Phase I, Orange County is responsible for one-quarter of the total cost. Additionally, St. Johns River Water Management, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and property owners themselves through a formal vote, share the remainder of the cost.

For Phase II, the same entities are responsible for the conversion to sewer with a grant submission to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection still under consideration at this time.
