Monday Morning Quarterback: Wekiva rallies, Apopka struggles

Posted

Wekiva 25, Winter Park 22

The Wekiva Mustangs overcame six turnovers and a 19-7 halftime deficit to defeat Winter Park 25-22 and remain undefeated. The win improves Wekiva's record to 3-0, and will likely preserve its #1 state ranking in the AP 8A poll.

Do it all senior Brandon Hill rushed for three touchdowns including two-yarder in the fourth quarter to give the Mustangs their only lead the entire game with 45 seconds left in the game.

Wekiva will return to action at home on September 21st against the Olympia Titans (0-3). Kickoff is at 7 PM.

Lakeland 37, Apopka 20

The Lakeland Dreadnaughts scored on a 78-yard kickoff return and blocked a punt in the first half to defeat the Apopka Blue Darters 37-20 for the second straight season. Lakeland (3-0) held the Blue Darters’ rushing game to only 151 yards after coming off a school record 615 yards in a 33-28 win over Bartram Trail the previous week. It was the first game Apopka played without its leading rusher Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton who will miss the remainder of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a medial collateral ligament.

Apopka took an early lead when running back Akeem Brown scored on a four-yard touchdown run, giving Apopka a 6-0 after a failed extra point attempt on the opening drive of the game.

But Lakeland answered on a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and then blocked an Apopka punt on its very next drive and scored on the next play on a two-yard touchdown run to lead 13-6.

The Blue Darters evened the score at 13-13 in the second quarter on another Brown touchdown run, this time from seven yards out.

However, Lakeland scored two more times before halftime on a 70-yard touchdown run by Demarkcus Bowman, and then on a 35-yard field goal to lead 23-13 at intermission.

Brown scored his third touchdown in the third quarter to cut Lakeland's lead to 30-20 on a 36-yard run, but the Blue Darters never got closer.

The loss drops Apopka to 2-1 on the season and may threaten their #4 ranking in the Associated Press State 8-A Top 10 poll.

The Blue Darters host defending state 8-A champion Dr. Phillips this Friday at Roger Williams Field on the campus of Apopka High School. Dr. Phillips is 1-2 on the season. Kickoff is at 7 PM.
