Habitat for Humanity Raises the Roof

Posted

Fun and festive was the overriding theme for Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County & Greater Apopka’s Inaugural Raise the Roof Event on November 5.

photo-5Held under the stars in Reiter Park in Longwood, the sold out event of 300 featured themed tables; ranging from Vegas to Roaring 20’s and a Pajama Party, was a hit for both attendees and the local non-profit. A team of judges evaluating each table for hotly contested awards readily accepted bribes which were turned over to Habitat for Humanity as part of the evening’s fundraising. The event, launched as the affiliate was celebrating its 25th year of service to the community, raised more than $70,000 through table sales, silent and live auctions, a wine pull and cash donations.

photo-1New Habitat homeowner Lisa Rose inspired attendees and captured their hearts with her story of perseverance and determination to provide a better life for her children. Lisa and her 3 children are one of 10 families that will call the townhomes at Magnolia Place in Longwood home.

“Life has been a constant struggle, having to work long hours only to get your check and have to decipher what bills to pay verses buying groceries – it was the hardest thing to do”, Lisa told the audience. “But, you do it; you do it because being a mom you put your kids first before anything else. So if that means you go without, you go without. My dreams have always been to be a good mom and to own my own home and go back to college once I’m settled. Two of my dreams have come true; two down - one to go.“
