FHP: Wind speeds from Hurricane Irma could close bridges

Posted

From the Florida Highway Patrol

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As Hurricane Irma approaches, sustained winds exceeding 40 miles per hour will prompt the closure of high profile bridges. The state Emergency Operations Center is receiving regular wind status updates from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), monitoring the wind speeds across bridges. The Florida Highway Patrol will close bridges once wind speeds become high enough to create dangerous driving conditions. As wind speeds continue to rise, law enforcement and FDOT personnel will be required to seek shelter and use of the road will be at a motorist’s own risk.

More than 1,700 FHP Troopers are working 12 hour shifts to ensure roads are safe and clear. Motorists can call *FHP (*347) to request roadside assistance.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles provides highway safety and security through excellence in service, education and enforcement. The Department is leading the way to a safer Florida through the efficient and professional execution of its core mission: the issuance of driver licenses, vehicle tags and titles and operation of the Florida Highway Patrol.
