The VOICE of Congress
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that the House Democratic Steering & Policy Committee has recommended to the Democratic Caucus that Congresswoman Val Demings of Florida be appointed to serve on the House Judiciary Committee.
“Congresswoman Val Demings is a fearless champion for justice and equality,” said Pelosi. “As a 27-year veteran of the police force who rose to become Orlando’s first female Chief of Police, Congresswoman Demings embodies integrity, courage, and effectiveness. On the House Judiciary Committee, she will be a strong voice to prevent gun violence and will stand firm against radical Republican efforts to target immigrant families, rip away the sacred right to vote and dishonor our nation’s most sacred values. Democrats look forward to Congresswoman Demings’ strong leadership to protect liberty and justice for all, not just the privileged few.”
Demings released the following statement in response to the appointment:
“After a troubling year, it has become increasingly obvious that the
most fundamental issues facing our country are matters of justice," she said. "The safety and security of our families and our communities depend on protecting the future of our democracy. The soul of our nation depends on our ability to expand equality and to balance respect for the rule of law with its proper application in all
situations with all persons."
Demings is a first-term congresswoman representing Florida's 10th Congressional District, which includes most of Apopka.
