On This Day in History: September 19th, 1957

Nevada is site of first-ever underground nuclear explosion

In December 1941, the U.S. government committed to building the world’s first nuclear weapon when President Franklin Roosevelt authorized $2 billion in funding for what came to be known as the Manhattan Project. The first test took place on July 16, 1945, at the Trinity site near Alamogordo, New Mexico. A few weeks later, on August 6, 1945, with the U.S. at war against Japan, President Harry Truman authorized the dropping of an atomic bomb named Little Boy over Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, on August 9, a nuclear bomb called Fat Man was dropped over Nagasaki. Two hundred thousand people, according to some estimates, were killed in the attacks on the two cities and on August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allied Powers.1957’s Operation Plumbbob took place at a time when the U.S. was engaged in a Cold War and arms race with the Soviet Union. In 1963, the U.S. signed the Limited Test Ban Treaty, which banned nuclear weapons testing in the atmosphere, underwater and outer space. A total of 928 tests took place at the Nevada Test Site between 1951 and 1992, when the U.S. conducted its last underground nuclear test. In 1996, the U.S signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which prohibits nuclear detonations in all environments.

  1. Testing continues today……it may not be nuclear, but it is bad! Right off our Florida coastline. Testing with powerful underwater explosions to see how the US Navy warships weather the impacts of the blasts. Endangering both the crew and the marine life. Marine mammals such as whales wash ashore dead, or barely alive, and beach themselves, then die. Researchers then speed to the shores, and say they don’t have a clue as to the cause of their deaths. This happens in the calving areas of the ocean, where the whales give live birth and nurse their babies. The US government doesn’t care. Governor Rick Scott loves underground fracking too. Blowing our Florida underground layers apart after injecting deadly chemicals and large amounts of water under pressure, to seek out fuel deposits, and potentially causing massive damage to the Florida aquifer, our drinking water source, that is unrepairable. Thus causing potential earthquakes, and the potential to even turn on a water spigot and there could be an explosion! Deranged foreign leaders hell-bent on world domination testing with their missiles…….God help us all.

  2. When I see the word Alamogordo I think of the US government’s chimpanzee primate research center, hidden away, locked away in the desert, from public view, and their biomedical invasive testing on the chimps. Who knew what horrid tests those animals had to endure? They had a long history of over two decades of abuse of the chimps. No way out for them, and the public mostly unaware of the horrors that the chimps had to endure, and even if the public was aware, they were powerless to do anything about it. 162 chimps. Some were retired to sanctuary life, I don’t know the status of the others. Who knows what goes on behind government testing facilities, locked away in remote areas of our nation? Maybe missing people are being tested on? Think it couldn’t happen? Think again.

  3. What about the big boats that have toilets that have chemicals to treat the human waste and go out 3 miles out to international waters off the east coast of Florida, and dump their toilet holding tanks into the Atlantic? How disgusting is that? Instead of holding the contents in the tanks, and coming back to the ports, and having a vaccum septic tank truck vaccum the holding tanks and suck the contents out and properly take the waste to the sewage treatment plants like they should, but no, it is easier, cheaper, and they can get away with it, because they don’t care about the environment! Cheap, cheap, cheap, as in free! As the boats head back into the port channels from the sea, people are out there swimming in the surf, playing in the waters, and fishing for their next meals in the water where the crap was dumped! Why don’t the lawmakers in Florida do something about that?

  4. Talking about bombs……..here is the latest bombshell !!!…..check out the next Apopka City Council meeting agenda packet, for Sept. 21, 2016, under the mayor’s report. To ratify a Community Development Director. I thought what? The city already has a Community Development Director? This must be a mistake! They must of meant a Community Economic Developer. No, not at all, apparently,.the wording of the packet indicates the impending departure of the Community Development Director…..????? They are getting hard to follow, and keep up with! What in the world is going on now under the big top???

  5. I said Clinton Eastwood, hahahaha!!!……..I meant Clint Eastwood! Clinton Eastwood would be a hybrid- cross of Hillary Clinton and Clint Eastwood! A very STRANGE genetically modified character!……heheeeehheeeee! OMG!

  6. My husband and I went to breakfast this morning. I said,” honey, push my label back into my shirt for me.” He said,” I can’t,” and I said, ” why”? He said,” you got your shirt on inside out.” OMG…… I stepped to the restroom and flipped it. I saw someone I knew, and laughed, and told her, and she said,” it is okay, this is Apopka, anything goes”…..I said, “right, right”……..!!!
