Apopka senior receives scholarship from Apopka City Commissioners

Becker, Arrowsmith partner 4 Good on two scholarships

Name an extra-curricular activity, charity, organization, or a person in need, and chances are Hope Hanson has helped them. Public service seems to be a part of the Apopka High School senior's DNA.

In her time as at AHS, Hanson has volunteered or contributed to an impressive list of service groups:

• She was part of the Junior Addition with OCPS where she earned the President’s Volunteer Service Medal three times for over 525 volunteer hours.
• She was Teacher Assistant and Summer Camp helper at Dream Lake and Apopka Middle School.
• She contributed in a Teen Volunteer Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital where she worked with younger chronically ill patients.
• She was a Youth Camp Counselor with the City of Apopka.
• She volunteered for Bread of Life, Bags of Hope, and Relay for Life.
• She is a Member of the National Honor Societies for Math, English, Social Studies, and Art, and is the Vice President of the Apopka Student Government Association.

According to Hanson, she has a passion for teaching young people the importance of civic education and being active in civic affairs. She will be attending Florida Gulf Coast University where she plans to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership.

Because of her impressive resume of public service, Hanson was awarded the Seat 4 Good Scholarship, presented by Former Apopka Seat #4 Commissioner Bill Arrowsmith, and current Seat #4 Commissioner Kyle Becker.

"The purpose of this scholarship is to reward the senior whose efforts have served our community well and to shape the next generation of Apopka leaders. In other words to help find my replacement," said Becker. "We had many great applications but one that really stood head and shoulders above the rest (was Hope Hanson). Between all of her efforts with the many organizations that she's volunteered for any hours that she's put into them, she could teach me a thing or two about time management."

Wekiva senior Khari Brown received the Seat 4 Good scholarship last week.

The Seat 4 Good Scholarship ensures the Apopka City Council Seat #4 maintains a legacy of giving back to the community through awarding a college scholarship for $1,000 each to a graduating high school senior from both Apopka and Wekiva High Schools who have exhibited a passion for civics and community service.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be:

• A graduating senior
• Accepted to accredited college or university
• Complete the Seat 4 Good Scholarship application
• Letter of recommendation from a non-family member, community leader, administrator, teacher, etc.

The preferences for applicants are:

• An Apopka resident
• financial need
• civic education and or/career path

On May 7th, Wekiva High School senior Khari Brown received the Seat 4 Good Scholarship from Arrowsmith and Becker at his school's awards ceremony. Brown will be attending the University of Florida during the 2018-19 school year.
