Hurricane projected to impact Florida on Sunday or Monday

From the City of Apopka Public Information Office

The City of Apopka will provide sandbags to the public Wednesday as part of early preparations for Hurricane Irma.

Sand and a minimum of 10,000 bags will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Edwards Field, 11 Forest Avenue. Drivers should enter the site from the east, along North Highland Avenue, and exit south onto East First Street. Residents can make up to 10 bags of sand. City representatives will be available for assistance.

The City of Apopka is monitoring the predicted track of Hurricane Irma, which will begin to impact Florida by Sunday or Monday, according to current forecasts from the National Hurricane Center. Hurricane Irma is a strong, Category 5 storm. A local impact will become clearer in the next day or two as it approaches the state.

City staff met Tuesday to prepare for the possibility of severe weather including heavy rain, flooding, high winds and flying debris. Apopka will coordinate hurricane response with Orange County, state and federal emergency management offices.

The city has postponed all activities with the Apopka Summer BBQ Showdown and Steak Cookoff presented by Flame Boss. The event, originally scheduled Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Recreation Complex, was to include a movie in the park on Friday and a truck show on Saturday. The city is consulting with event organizers and sponsors regarding a new date for the event.

An annually scheduled city activity on Monday to recognize the events of September 11, 2001 is cancelled. The Apopka Food Truck Roundup will proceed as scheduled from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Kit Land Nelson Park.

Potential changes to the city’s solid waste collection service will be determined later this week pending future forecasts for Hurricane Irma.

The city will provide information and updates during the week via the municipal website, www.apopka.net , and the city’s Facebook page. Residents are encouraged to be prepared for any severe weather event and to monitor progress of Hurricane Irma at www.nhc.noaa.gov.
