Apopka High Senior awarded the Alice B. Miner Scholarship

Slagel wins $1,000 scholarship from NORWF

Abigail Slagel will attend The University of Florida this fall.

Abigail Slagel is one of those rare students that will probably embrace college as somewhat of a rest compared to her activities in high school.

The Apopka High Senior is currently The Supervisor of Elections for The Student Government Association (SGA), the Secretary of The National Honor Society, Treasurer of The Beta Club, a member of The Science National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and the National French Honor Society.

Slagel also has 230 documented hours of service in the community – including volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and at her Church Annunciation Catholic.

And in her spare time Slagel started her own business – a Math Tutoring service for four middle school girls.

It is this entrepreneurial spirit, combined with academic excellence (a 3.9 GPA), community involvement, and extra curricular initiative that made her the winner of The Northwest Orange Republican Womens Federation’s (NORWF) Alice B. Miner Memorial Scholarship.

Her work as Supervisor of Elections for the Apopka High School SGA was noted by the NORWF.

“I wanted to be a part of student government because it was a good way to become involved in the community and in my school,” she said.

Slagel is excited to be graduating in two weeks, and will use the $1,000 prize at the University of Florida this fall. She also won a $1,000 scholarship from The Apopka Women’s Club earlier this year.

Slagel had partial scholarship offers from Wheaton College in Illinois and Bowdoin College in Maine to play Volleyball, but she turned them down to go to UF, and while she will not major in political science, she is considering getting involved in student government at UF.
