Apopka High School Debate Team Prepares for National Tournaments

Posted

The Apopka High School debate team began a busy April with Griffin Growl, a novice-only tournament held at Lake Mary Preparatory School. Junior Caroline Klouse (Dramatic Performance), freshman Nate Douglas (Lincoln-Douglas), and senior Woody Lanot (Radio Broadcasting) all earned medals and flowers for placing in the top three.

Just days after that, several team members traveled to West Palm Beach to compete in the Florida Forensic League Novice State Championship. That proved to be a grueling tournament with long days and early mornings, but AHS did not come home empty-handed. Sophomore Christopher Hamilton and junior Abigail Hinds both "broke" into Student Congress semi-finals, winning medals and a gavel, and freshman Broderick Beauchamp broke into Humorous Interpretation semi-finals, winning a plaque.

Of course, the month was not over yet.... On Saturday, April 23rd, Nate Douglas (Lincoln-Douglas), Abigail Hinds (Congress), and Brody Beauchamp (Humorous Interpretation) brought home 2nd place trophies from the Central Florida Debate Initiative Finals held at Timber Creek High School. Sophomore Chris Hamilton placed 3rd in Congress after many levels of tie-breaking--the difference coming down to a single point from prior speeches. Varsity debaters Ethan Uhlig, Morgan Donaghy, Marshah Menos, and Cynthia Menos judged and coached the novice students. Varsity Congressman Johnathan Cox presided over the novice congress and received an engraved gavel for his service this past year.

Apopka High School debaters are still working to find funding for national tournaments later in May (California) and June (Utah), which are quite expensive due to their distance. Many thanks to Nick Eagle, Hunt Club Chick-fil-a, Chili's, and the Central Florida Debate Initiative for their donations!
