Apopka Firefighters rescue dog from burning home

Apopka firefighters rushed into a burning home Wednesday afternoon, extinguishing the flames and saving one of the family’s beloved dogs.

Layla, a 22-month-old Rottweiler mix, was found completely unresponsive inside a back bedroom of the smoke-filled house at 181 Summerset Drive. Some firefighters carried the animal outside while others quickly contained the fire to the home’s kitchen.

Firefighters huddled around the dog and immediately started cardiac massage. They worked anxiously for about 45 seconds, using an air mask designed specifically for dogs and cats. Layla soon gained consciousness, looking up at the firefighters as they began to cool her body with water.

Within five minutes, the dog was back on her feet and happily responding to her family.

“That was amazing,” said owner Cornelius King, who arrived home with his family about 3 p.m. when he immediately noticed smoke billowing from inside the structure. He found one dog, a Chihuahua named Pepper, which escaped unharmed. But he was unable to navigate the dense smoke to find Layla. He called 911, and the Apopka Firefighters arrived within about three minutes.

“They made it here so quick – I’m glad that I live in Apopka,” said a very grateful King.

No members of the family were injured although they are seeking assistance from the American Red Cross for temporary living arrangements.

The fire appeared to start with the home’s oven. The structure had smoke damage – much of the fire damage was limited to the kitchen.
