Apopka collects 66,000 cubic yards of debris

The City of Apopka has resumed collection of bulky, curbside refuse such as bagged garbage and large household items that were delayed by the storm debris cleanup from Hurricane Irma. Crews started work Tuesday in Oak Ridge and in Wekiva Run.

Collections are delayed because of an estimated four times the typical amount of bulky waste in residential areas. Because of the volume, in some cases, it takes city crews four days to collect what they would ordinarily collect in a single day.

If possible, customers are asked to hold bulky items until the following week to allow collections to get back on a standard schedule.

To date, city workers and private contractors have collected an estimated 66,000 cubic yards to storm debris created by Hurricane Irma. Contractor CrowderGulf has nine large trucks and two trailers working in Apopka. Two bucket trucks arrived this week to cut down hanging branches and damaged trees above public roads and right-of-way areas. In many cases, the “hangers” are placed on curbs to await pickup from storm-debris haulers.

In Zone 1, crews are finishing Partnership Hills, Lake Todd Estates, Sanctuary Golf Place, Overlook Apartments and Plymouth Landing.

In Zone 2, work is continuing in Rock Springs Ridge, Phase 1, and Wekiva Glen. Both of these neighborhoods have very large amounts of storm debris. In Zone 3, crews started in the Pines of Wekiva community and the Summit Street area. In Zone 4, work has focused on Sheeler Oaks as well as on some pickups in Piedmont Lakes.

As a result of the large vehicles needed for debris removal, residents are asked to follow these guidelines:

• Please make every effort to keep the street clear of parked cars when debris crews are in your area.

• Please help to keep storm drains clear. Residents can help aid the debris collection by sweeping up loose leaves and debris after each pass.

• Please place debris between the curb and the sidewalk. Avoid placing debris in the street, near mailboxes, fire hydrants, or on top of water mains or electric transformers or underneath power lines or cable wires.

• Please keep hurricane tree debris in its own pile.

• Please keep bagged leaves & debris, construction debris, fencing, furniture, appliances or anything else separated from hurricane tree debris piles. This will help with the disposal process.
