7,236 free vaccines provided at Back-to-School Immunization event

On Sunday, August 4, 2019, the Florida Department of Health in Orange County (DOH-Orange) wrapped up a very successful two-week long Back to School Immunization event held at the West Oaks Mall.

Starting on July 22, 2019, over the course of 14 consecutive days DOH-Orange staff administered a total of 7,236 school required vaccines to 2,649 clients that ranged in age of 4 months to 18 years of age.

The total number of vaccines administered at this year’s immunization event more than tripled the total from last year’s one-week event and doubled the number of clients assisted as well. The vaccines were provided at no cost to individuals ages 18 years and under.

“We are grateful to our staff for their dedication and passion to serve,” said Dr. Raul Pino, Interim Director of DOH-Orange. “The immunization event not only makes a vital contribution to the children of our community by ensuring they are protected from preventable diseases but also allows them to be ready to learn on the first day of the new school year.”

Months and months of planning and coordination went into the event in order to make it successful. Members of the Immunization, Emergency Operations, Information Technology, Nursing, and School Health programs along with the Business Office played important roles in the success of the event.

For students that still need their school required vaccines and/or the 680 form, they can call the DOH-Orange Immunization program at 407-858-1444 to make an appointment. The immunization services are free for eligible, school-age children who are 18 years of age and younger. If the student only needs the 680 form, there is a small fee.

Vaccines help develop immunity to many serious infectious diseases by permitting the body to recognize and fight vaccine-preventable diseases. The following vaccines are required for children entering preschool and grades K-12: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), measles, mumps, rubella, polio, varicella (chickenpox) and hepatitis B. Students entering college should check with the health services at their college regarding immunization requirements.
