Wekiva High earns STEM grant

Posted

It's been a good couple of weeks for Wekiva High School both on the gridiron and the classroom. Last week, the Wekiva Mustangs qualified for the Class 8A playoffs in football with a 49-20 victory over West Orange. This week, the Orange County Public Schools announced that Wekiva High School won a $50,000 grant that has been awarded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Wells Fargo to expand the school's Aquaponics STEM Learning project. This donation will enhance Wekiva's agriscience magnet program and experiential learning for students in STEM classes.

The initiative will also provide professional development for teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through aquaponics, real-world #STEM learning opportunities for students, community service (donations to the Second Harvest Food Bank Apopka food pantries), and parent and community engagement. The result will be healthy and efficient food production shared within the community, water conservation, and, ultimately, enhanced teaching and student learning through aquaponics.

Wekiva's Agriscience program is one of 38 Magnet programs in the district. Anyone interested in learning more can attend one of our Magnet Fairs scheduled for Nov. 3rd and 10th.

The OCPS Magnet School applications for the 2017-18 school year opened yesterday, and there are two magnet fairs so that students can learn about their options.
