Name of Apopka teen killed on turnpike released

The Florida Highway Patrol released the name of the victim that was hit and killed by a vehicle while standing on the shoulder of the Florida Turnpike yesterday. Sanjay Nandram,16, was a senior at Apopka High School.

According to an FHP report, at about 6:40 AM on Sunday, Tanya Garcia was traveling northbound on the turnpike, in the right lane. Sanjay was standing on the east shoulder of the northbound lanes on the passenger side of his vehicle.

Sanjay had been in a previous crash as a driver with another car and the vehicles and Sanjay were out of the travel lanes and on the shoulder. Garcia drove onto the shoulder and the left side of her vehicle struck the passenger side of Sanjay and his vehicle.

According to Sgt. Kim Montes of the FHP, Garcia told troopers that she fell asleep prior to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation, and charges against Garcia are pending according to Montes.
