Supper Club opens in Apopka

A new Supper Club is coming to Apopka. Great...so what's a Supper Club?

Okay, picture this... Brad Pitt walks into an underground garage and is surrounded by a bunch of guys who seem a little rough around the edges.

"The first rule of fight club is you don't talk about fight club," he says in a monotone voice. "The second rule of fight club is YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!" Pitt says... this time with emphasis. "And the final rule is if this is your first time at fight club, you have to fight."

Supper Club isn't like that. You can talk about it all you want and you don't have to fight. You can even bring a date.

The owners at Apopka Golf & Tennis are going retro with their newest offering, the Apopka Supper Club.

Again you might ask, what is a Supper Club?

It's a club where meals are followed by live entertainment, music, and dancing. Supper Clubs began as private clubs over 100 years ago. People who knew each other met for late-night meals and entertainment. By the 1920s the concept was extended to the public.

Some supper clubs were well known, such as New York City's most well-known nightspots - El Morocco, the Stork Club, and the Copacabana. In movies of the 1930s and 1940s, supper clubs were places that big stars and popular bands such as Glenn Miller played, but far more common were the sorts that hosted local musicians.

No matter the entertainment, patrons still dressed up and enjoyed a night out, dining and dancing, and maybe a floor show, without spending a fortune.

This Saturday, January 21st, Apopka Golf & Tennis at Errol will be introducing this most classic concept to Apopka.

The evening will begin with cocktails at 6:00 PM. A plated, prime-rib dinner will be served at 7:00 PM, followed by entertainment - "Fowler-Mania - The Variety Show of the Year." Supper clubbers will enjoy music, song, and magic. Dancing will follow.

The cost of the evening is $25.00 per person, plus tax and gratuities. There is complimentary valet parking.

This is the first of many Supper Club events," said Larry Kline, spokesperson for Apopka Golf & Tennis. "We plan to offer the Supper Club at least one Saturday night each month. The entertainment will be different each time."

Those who follow the food scene will already know that the term "supper club" has evolved and is now also associated with so-called "underground restaurants." These restaurants generally operate out of someone's home thus bypassing local zoning and health-code regulations. They are usually advertised by word of mouth.
