STORM DEBRIS REMOVAL UPDATE

From the City of Apopka

Six days after outside contractors began working to help remove storm debris in Apopka, the unofficial estimate of debris collected to date – as of this afternoon – is about 13,000 cubic yards. This is the result of a combined effort by both outside contractors and City of Apopka crews.

In the wake of Hurricane Irma, the total estimated amount of storm debris in Apopka originally stood at about 250,000 cubic yards. With a current estimated collection capacity of about 2,500 cubic yards per day, it will take several weeks to collect all of the storm debris in Apopka.

Outside contractor crews have completed the first pass on Errol Parkway; on Lake Francis Drive west of Errol Parkway and in the Eagles Rest and Countryside neighborhoods. Currently, these crews are making progress on Tournament Drive in Debris Zone 1.

Since the storm, City crews have made the first pass in Debris Zone 1 in Oak Ridge; Wekiva Run; Chandler Estates; Arbor Ridge; Emerald Cove; Lester Ridge; Oak Hill Reserve; Spring Ridge; Country Crossing and in Bluegrass Estates. Crews also have made a first pass on the following streets: Rock Ridge Boulevard up to Tayside Court; Christiana Avenue between Monroe and Votaw; Orange and Magnolia off Christiana. There may be a few piles, large stumps and mixed debris that were skipped for various reasons and they are scheduled for follow-up. City claw trucks will continue in the Christiana area Saturday.

Also since the storm, City of Apopka rear-loader garbage trucks have made it through Debris Zone 1 and half of Debris Zone 2 from between Main and Welch to pick up bags, cans, and furniture.

NEXT WEEK’S PLAN

Next week, the Public Services Department expects debris collection to accelerate into a more productive pace. Here is the plan:

Additional outside crews are expected to arrive over the weekend. The plan is to certify this equipment and deploy it Monday. These new crews will be deployed initially in Debris Zone One east of Errol Parkway as well as in Plymouth Landing and Partnership Hills.

City crews and rear loaders will focus on bags, cans and furniture and mixed debris piles with the goal of making it through the rest of the city by Wednesday. Once we are caught up on this issue, the plan is to put rear loaders back on storm debris on Wednesdays and weekends. City claw trucks will support the rear loaders for large mixed debris or construction debris.
