Representative Val Demings responds to Apopka's questions

“Ask Your Congresswoman”

Back in October then-candidate Val Demings went on a “Lift every voice listening tour." As we reported at the time, her stop in Apopka felt more like an incumbent stopping by her hometown to talk to a few friends. Demings facilitated discussions on issues almost as much as she answered questions from the audience. She was warm and authentic and seemed comfortable with the diverse crowd.

Fast-forward four months. She is now Representative Val Demings from Florida's 10th Congressional District following a resounding victory in November. She may have a new title and a residence in Washington, DC, but her passion for continuing the dialogue has not wavered.

Demings is launching an initiative to stay informed on the issues that matter to the residents of Apopka and to keep them up to date on the work she is doing in Washington. She reached out to The Apopka Voice and asked us to help facilitate an online format we are calling, "Ask your Congresswoman."

Here are the first round of questions, with Demings' answers...

Question: Congresswoman Demings, thank you for all the hard work that you do. Will you do what you can to make sure that the investigation into the Russian ties to President Trump and his campaign and his business conflicts are thoroughly investigated and his taxes released? Will you hold his cabinet appointees responsible for protecting our environment, education, health affordability, and economy?

-Kathy Guerra

Demings: "These are very important questions, Kathy. As a member of the Oversight Committee, I have been pushing for and will continue to work to ensure a bipartisan and independent investigation into President Trump’s personal, professional, and financial ties to Russia. I have voted for legislation that would force President Trump to release his tax returns and will continue to push for that legislation, specifically the Presidential Tax Transparency act. I take my role on the Oversight committee very seriously, in that role I believe we must hold all our elected officials, including myself, and all of those appointed at the executive branch, to the highest of standards. I will continue to seek transparency and the truth in this role."

Question: As our representative, what are you going to do protect DACA recipients in our community from possible deportations?

-Rigoberto Rodriguez

Demings: "It’s been very troubling for me to see some of the stories in recent weeks regarding DACA recipients. I will continue to fight to ensure our nation keeps the promises we made to the “Dreamers.” We encourage anyone who believes they are being illegally targeted to contact our office. We will do our best to connect them with the appropriate resources. As a member of Congress and a member of the Homeland Security Committee, I will continue to ensure that our immigration laws are being followed and my constituents are protected."

Question: Are you going to be having a town hall meeting here in the Apopka area anytime soon, Val?

-T.Reid

Demings: "We are planning a town hall for Tuesday, April 11th. It will be held at the Town Council Chambers from 7-9pm. I look forward to seeing you, and everyone else there."

Use this link to ask your question. We will forward the questions onto Representative Val Demings who will provide responses that will be published on The Apopka Voice.
