A race on the turnpike ends in high speed crash

FHP Trooper clocks Nissan 370Z at 132mph before colliding with garbage truck

These kinds of racing stories always turn out so much better in the movies...

Carlos Guivas is a 60-year-old from Deltona who drives a garbage truck. Daniele Heller is a 20-year-old from Clermont who drives a speedy 2013 Nissan 370Z. Both men had a plan for the day, and it did not involve the other.

Little did they know their worlds were going to collide on a little stretch of Florida Turnpike one mile from the Ocoee/Apopka exit they call mile marker 270.5.

Heller was driving his 2013 Nissan 370Z southbound on the turnpike. He was going real fast, and perhaps he has heard Sammy Hagar's "I can't drive 55" song one time too many.

It was approximately 8:30AM on Tuesday when Trooper Andrew Pupo of the Florida Highway Patrol was sitting in his cruiser observing traffic going northbound. But then Pupo looked southbound and witnessed a spectacle that must have looked like an outtake from Smokey and The Bandit. According to Pupo's report, he visually estimated that Heller's Nissan and an unidentified red vehicle were traveling at around 125-130 mph. He clocked Heller at 132.2mph as they blew by him. The two vehicles were presumably racing.

The speed limit on the turnpike is 70mph.

Pupo began pursuit of the two vehicles, while he witnessed them going in and out of lanes and passing every vehicle they encountered.

Guivas was driving his garbage truck southbound ahead of Heller. According to witnesses, Heller attempted to pass the garbage truck on the left shoulder, but lost control and hit the center barrier wall. Heller then re-directed his Nissan back into the southbound lanes and collided with Guivas' garbage truck.

Despite the significant damage to the Nissan, Heller suffered only minor injuries.

He was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center and treated, then arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of reckless driving. The red vehicle was never identified, but it is presumed to have won the race.

Guivas, it is presumed, got back into his garbage truck and continued his work day.
