Police arrest suspect for discharging firearm near Apopka High School

Shots fired near the school forced a lockdown last week

A 17-year-old male juvenile (name withheld) has been arrested for discharging a weapon in public and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

On January 25th at approximately 3 PM, the Apopka Police Department (APD) dispatch received multiple emergency calls regarding a fight occurring at the park adjacent to Apopka High School (AHS). The calls relayed that multiple subjects were running away from the scene, and AHS was being placed on “Code Red” for gunshots being heard by AHS staff. Information obtained from the school indicated that multiple students and teachers were hiding in various areas of the school. Based on all of the developing information being received, multiple APD units responded to multiple locations at the school and surrounding areas. It was reported multiple witnesses heard gunshots in the area. Based on the information received, several detectives responded to Lancer Oak Drive. A canvas was conducted of the area in an attempt to locate any evidence. During the search, three discharged shell casings from a firearm were located across Lancer Oak Drive. The shell casings were marked and the immediate area was blocked off as a crime scene.

The suspect was seen extending their arm up into the air and maintaining the position until just prior to entering the back right passenger seat.

Detectives located area surveillance cameras and suspect vehicles were identified. Several individuals can be seen running and one individual was seen entering a vehicle. The suspect was seen extending their arm up into the air and maintaining the position until just prior to entering the back right passenger seat.

The vehicle was located which led detectives to the suspect, a juvenile whose name is being withheld. The juvenile subsequently admitted he was in possession of the gun and discharging the firearm. A criminal history check of the juvenile revealed he is a convicted felon currently on probation.

The juvenile has been charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Delinquent and Discharging a Firearm in Public.
