Contractor hired by City backs out of its contract

From the City of Apopka:

The City of Apopka was informed Wednesday that its contractor for storm-debris removal would not be able to perform its services at this time. The reason: The statewide effects of Hurricane Irma and an unprecedented demand among communities throughout Florida. The City of Apopka is one of many cities in Central Florida and throughout the state facing this shortage of resources.

Because of the accumulation of storm debris throughout Apopka, the City will promptly move to meet this challenge and seek a new vendor.

The City has three goals:

- Remove storm debris from public streets and rights of way as quickly as possible.

- Procure these services at the most cost-efficient price in the current marketplace.

- Adhere to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rules so as to strengthen the City’s standing for federal reimbursement for the expense of collecting and disposing of storm debris.

IT IMPORTANT TO NOTE that City of Apopka Public Service crews have already begun the process of collecting storm debris. The City has three crews who have been collecting debris since Monday. The volume of debris will require outside help.

This is a developing story, and The Apopka Voice will update the details as they become available.
