Orange County Mayor Jacobs speaks out on alleged remarks by President Trump

Posted

Teresa Jacobs, the Mayor of Orange County, released a statement this afternoon in response to remarks allegedly made by President Donald Trump in the Oval Office yesterday.

Here is Jacobs' statement:

“Yesterday, we heard reports of a very disparaging comment attributed to the President. Although I have no way of knowing whether these reports are accurate, I do know that on the eve of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, when we honor his legacy of love, equality, peace and justice, it's more important than ever that we keep the principles of equality, respect and inclusion at the forefront. Orange County is recognized as a community that is both respectful and joyous in celebrating our wonderful blend of culture, religion and diversity. We deeply value all who have chosen to live here, including individuals and families from Haiti, El Salvador and the countries of Africa. We celebrate their heritage and culture, as well as their contributions to our community.”

According to a report in The Washington Post, President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers on Thursday in the Oval Office when they discussed protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to several people briefed on the meeting.

The Post's sources said the President made this remark:

“Why are we having all these people from s---hole countries come here?”

The Post's sources also said that Trump suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries such as Norway.

“Why do we need more Haitians?” Trump said, according to Post sources described as White House officials. “Take them out.”

This morning, the President denied he used the phrase “s---hole countries” to describe foreign nations during the oval office meeting.

"The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made — a big setback for DACA!" the president tweeted Friday, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program."

Trump also denied he made derogatory comments about Haitians, including “Why do we want people from Haiti here?” and saying that all Haitians have AIDS.

"Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country," Trump tweeted. "Never said 'take them out.' Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings — unfortunately, no trust!"
