From the Orange County Government Media Relations Office

WHAT: In honor of the national “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” on April 27, Orange County Government is sponsoring “Take Our Children to Work Day.” In addition to the activities planned by each division, Orange County Government is hosting a reception attended by various Commissioners while the children lead a mock 30-minute Board of County Commissioners hearing. The purpose of the event is to provide students (ages 8-18) with a firsthand look at local government in action and how it positively impacts society. This year’s national theme for Take Our Children to Work Day is “Count On Me!” will share what it means to be dependable and teach children why dependability is important in the workplace, the community and in their education.

WHEN: Thursday, April 27, 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. (mock hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m.)

WHERE: Orange County Administration Building

Board of County Commission Chambers – first floor

201 S. Rosalind Ave.

Orlando, FL 32801

WHO: Orange County employees and their children. Orange County’s Parks & Recreation mascot – Scooter – will be in attendance to interact with kids and take photos. In addition, details will be shared with students about the Mayor’s “Let’s Read Orange County Program.” Orange County Library will have library card registration available and the non-profit Just 1 Book will be onsite. This year’s event is expected to host more than 100 County employees and their children.

Background: Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work program goes beyond the average practice of “shadowing” an adult. Exposing young citizens to what a parent or mentor does during the work day is important. Showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future, and allowing them to begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success.
