A new year's commitment to challenge yourself

One day teacher asked Dootsie Bobo (not his real name) what he wanted to be when he grew up.

Instead of one of the stock answers such as a policeman, or a fireman, doctor, or the president, without a moment's hesitation Dootsie Bobo answered, “Well teacher, I done puzzled on it some an’ I decided I want to be the village idjit!”

Now as you can imagine the teacher was somewhat taken aback by this answer, so her next question was, “Dootsie Bobo, why in the world do you want to be the village idiot?”

Dootsie Bobo had obviously given the subject some study as his answer revealed.

“Well teacher, of all people, what with you being at the university and all you should be able to figure that out, even an idjit knows that being the village idjit is an easy job, and if you are the village idjit nobody expects much of you!”

Now I told you that little story so that you will know that not everyone has high aspirations.

I know better than to ask you such a ridiculous question as, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” But really, are you working toward an ideal that is going to please Papa God?

Are you content with where you are today, spiritually, morally, intellectually?

How many of us are just drifting through life with no definite goals?

Have you had dreams that you have allowed to slip by unfulfilled?

I don’t believe it is ever too late to realize your dreams, to re-create yourself.

I challenge you to grab life by the mane, drag yourself into the saddle, and ride baby ride, because it doesn’t bring you, or Papa God, any credit just stumbling through life like a lobotomized lab rat.

Challenge yourself! Set a goal that is difficult, if not seemingly impossible! Who knows what you might accomplish.

Here it is, almost a new year. I began working on my new year's commitment to myself about four months ago by going back to the gym.

You notice I didn’t use that ratty, dog-eared, mildewed, new years resolution thing. I said commitment! And boy, am I feeling good

(There are several excellent gyms in the area but I joined Anytime Fitness in The Wekiva Riverwalk shopping plaza next to Garibaldi's Restaurant. Stop by and say hi to the owners, Jason and Kristin Paris. They are nice folks, you will like them, they are like family)

Oh yeah, I’m sorry to inform you but the job of village idjit was taken by a fellow named Dootsie Bobo.
