High School Students Help Clean-up Apopka

On Saturday, May 14, 2016, Orange County sponsored a neighborhood clean-up in Apopka to promote a clean community.

Over 200 volunteers from the Apopka area participated including more than 150 students from Apopka and Wekiva High Schools.

“I am so excited about the turn out today," said District 2 County Commissioner Bryan Nelson. "It is rewarding for Apopka to have so many volunteers making our community a better place to live.”

Orange County Police Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Code Enforcement, HSC II Parent Awareness and The South Apopka Ministerial Alliance, and the Davis Lodge 47 participated as well.

The Department of Juvenile Justice participated in the neighborhood clean-up to allow their students to obtain community service hours.

Many businesses in the City of Apopka showed their support by donating food for the volunteers, including:

Caffe Positano

Rita’s Italian Ice

McDonalds

Beef O’ Brady’s

Walmart

Orange County Fire and Rescue

The staff arrived around 7:30 to help set up the event and sign-in. Volunteers started arriving shortly after and the event officially started at 8:00 am. Volunteers were supplied with gloves, trash bags, Nifty-Nabbers, breakfast refreshments, and event t-shirts by the Orange County Neighborhood Preservation & Revitalization Division. Volunteers were transported by the Orange County Code Enforcement to their designated clean-up zone.

Along with the street clean-ups two houses on 11th street were painted by the Apopka High School Football Team offensive line. Davis Lodge 47 painted a house on 18th street.

This clean-up focused on South Apopka District 2 in Orange County which includes 2.1 miles of Sheeler Road to the East, Marden to Bradshaw Road to the West, U.S. 411 to the North and Cleveland Road to the South.

Get involved with South Apopka Safe Neighborhood by joining us at the John H. Bridges Community Center the first Thursday of every month at 6pm. These meetings are open to the public and give the community the chance to discuss any issues they have with the board to better our neighborhood.
