Morning Crash: Apopka resident collides with OCSO vehicle

The Apopka Police Department responded to a collision involving an Apopka resident and an Orange County Sheriff this morning. At approximately 4:15 AM, Sonny Almanza, 25 of Apopka, who was operating a gray Nissan Sentra, struck the rear of an OCSO Chevrolet Impala, driven by Deputy Cheyenne Dasilva, while it was in transport. The collision occured at the intersection of Benbow Court and Orange Blossom Trail in Apopka.

Indicators of impairment were observed by APD Officer Robert Campbell, who arrested Almanza at the scene for DUI. Upon his arrest APD officers also found marijuana, cocaine and drug equipment in Almanza's vehicle.

DaSilva was transported to Florida South Hospital due to her injuries.

Almanza was charged with marijuana possession with intent to sell, possession of cocaine, possession of over 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of drug equipment. He was transported to the Orange County Correctional Facility.

The damage to the OCSO vehicle and Almanza's Nissan was estimated to be approximately $7,000.
