Sara, whose community service platform of anti-bullying awareness helped place her in the Top-Ten of the 2013 Miss Florida Pageant and received the Miss America Pageant Community Service Award for her platform's efforts. Attending Miss Apopka Pageants and the send-off receptions that the City of Apopka helps host annually each year piqued the interest of the granddaughters of Commissioner Velazquez so much that she took her oldest granddaughter to Tampa to attend the Miss Florida Pageant, where they were in the audience night this year's Miss Florida title-holder, Courtney Sexton, was crowned Miss Florida 2016.

Courtney, a UCF graduate student majoring in Health Administration, was awarded educational scholarships totaling over $21,700 to use towards achieving her educational goals and will serve as this year's Miss Apopka Pageant emcee. Rosali Morris, pageant executive director says, "We are honored to have Courtney serve as our emcee and hopes that she will share some of her Miss Florida memories with our audience.

Tickets for the pageant may be purchased at the door. Adult tickets, which includes the program book, cost $10 and the amount of the ticket is $6 for children 10 and under.
