Man arrested for attempted murder and aggravated assault

Posted

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) arrested Jonathan Vitale, 35, of Lake Mary, for attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault during an incident at his residence last night. According to the SCSO, Vitale fired toward deputies and was struck by return fire, sustaining a non-life threatening injury to his forearm.

At approximately 6:40 p.m. last night, deputies responded to a disturbance call at a residence located in the 500 block of Holbrook Circle in unincorporated Lake Mary. According to family members, Vitale was armed with a knife and making threats to harm himself.

When deputies entered the home, they found a knife embedded in a door and heard a gunshot fired from within the home. Deputies retreated to the front of the home to take cover. Vitale then concealed himself behind a hallway wall and threatened deputies with a laser-equipped firearm. During the incident, Vitale refused commands to put the weapon down or safely surrender, and instead pointed his firearm at, and fired rounds toward, the deputies. A deputy returned fire, striking Vitale once on the forearm. No deputies were injured, and no other family members were inside the residence at the time of the incident.

Vitale was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and then booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility on a no-bond status. Vitale is scheduled to attend first appearance tomorrow at 9 a.m.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
