5,400 tractors involved

The John Deere Tractor Company announced the recall of about 5,400 tractors because the reverse implement option (RIO) system can fail, posing a laceration hazard to bystanders. RIO is a safety system that shuts off power to the mower blades when the machine is placed into reverse.

The recall involves John Deere models X710, X730, X734, X738, and X739 lawn and garden tractors with serial numbers beginning with 1M0X. A complete list of serial numbers included in this recall is available on John Deere's website. The lawn and garden tractors have “John Deere” printed on the side and are green and yellow with yellow rims. The model number is on both sides of the engine hood. The serial number is located on the right side, below the foot rest.

No injuries have been reported.

Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled tractors and contact a John Deere dealer for a free repair. John Deere is contacting all registered owners of the recalled lawn and garden tractors directly.

The recalled tractors were sold by John Deere independent dealers nationwide from December 2015 through July 2016. The tractors were sold for $8,800 and $11,700.

Anyone using one of these lawn and garden tractors should stop using them immediately and contact a John Deere dealer for a free repair. John Deere is contacting all registered owners of the recalled tractors, says the CPSC.
