Goodwill calling for donations this holiday season

Proceeds fund community job training and placement programs

goodwill-letterhead-logoFor most retail stores, high customer traffic and under-stocked shelves are a good sign. However, for Goodwill Industries of Central Florida – which depends on proceeds from sales of donated items to fund job training programs – low inventory means one thing: donations are needed.

“Donations allow us to provide employment placement services and other community based programs to people with disabilities, those who lack education or work experience and others facing challenges to finding employment,” said Bill Oakley, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Central Florida.

In 2015, the nonprofit – which operates in Orange, Osceola, Lake, Seminole, Brevard and Volusia counties – provided over 42,900 people with job training by helping them address barriers such as disabilities, homelessness and lack of skills so they can enter or re-enter the workforce. These services helped place over 7,500 people in jobs last year.

“With the holidays fast approaching, we encourage residents to donate items, like clothes and toys,” said Oakley. “Not only does this make room for new holiday gifts, it provides an end-of-year charitable tax deduction for donors and helps support local residents looking for work.”

Residents can donate gently used clothing, household goods and electronics to their nearest retail store or Donation Xpress.

The Apopka Goodwill is located at 1312 E. Semoran Blvd. (SR436). They are open Monday through Saturday 9:00 A.M.- 9:00 P.M., and Sunday 10:00 A.M.- 8:00 P.M. Their phone number is 407-720-3311.
