Fiona Fizzles - Gaston gets going

The National Hurricane Center has downgraded Tropical Storm Fiona to a tropical depression. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Fiona could become a remnant low during this time.

While Fiona is fizzling the Hurricane Center upgraded Tropical Depression #7 to Tropical Storm Gaston.

 

Gaston Track 23 500At 5:00 AM EDT the center of Tropical Storm Gaston was moving toward the west-northwest near 20 mph. The storm's forward speed is expected to slow during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast, and Gaston is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center.
