Deputy of the Year is Worthy

The incident started at approximately 9:08 PM. The first 911 caller stated the suspect was repeatedly shooting from across the street and a bullet had entered their home, which was occupied by children. Deputy Nick Worthy was the first to arrive at approximately 9:12 PM and turned onto Aurora Road from West King Street where he observed a subject matching the description of the armed suspect.

Worthy stopped his car in the roadway and activated his emergency blue-lights, at which time the suspect began advancing toward the vehicle discharging his weapon into the marked patrol car.

Worthy exited his vehicle and took cover as he exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

During the exchange, the suspect aggressively advanced toward Deputy Worthy’s location at the rear of the patrol car from the front and continued to discharge his firearm at the Deputy.

Deputy Nick Worthy of the Brevard County Sheriffs Office was named the Florida Sheriffs Associations 2016 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

Prior to his service with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Worthy served 5 tours overseas as a US Army Ranger Sergeant and Team Leader, where he was awarded the Bronze Star With Valor in combat for his heroic actions in Afghanistan.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey stated, “We couldn’t be more proud of Deputy Worthy. Nick and his fellow Deputies take great risks on a daily basis as they stand between our citizens and those who wish them harm. Deputy Worthy’s actions were truly an act of courage and heroism. Nick, without hesitation, placed himself in imminent danger to protect lives. His actions exemplify the highest degree of honor, the ideals of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, and the essence of the law enforcement profession.”
