Community Groups to Recognize Apopka’s First Responders

Posted

September 11th, 2001.

It's a date that lives in our hearts and minds. It's the most jarring event in American history since Pearl Harbor. Fifteen years later, the United States still remembers the sacrifice of first responders, and celebrates their service.

Apopka in particular has big events planned.

The Apopka First Responder Day is a recognition for local firefighters and police officers on the 15th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

A local group of parents and children associated with Girl Scout Troop #822, Cub Scout Troop #211 and Boy Scout Troop #211 plans to provide meals to firefighters and courtesy packages to police officers on Saturday, September 10th. Emergency dispatchers will be recognized, and police canines will get doggie treat bags. Apopka residents also are asked to wear red, white and blue that day to show their support.

"We decided to do something a little different and get the community involved," said Tamara Smith, a co-sponsor of Girl Scout Troop #211. "And they (the community) jumped in with donations and volunteering their time."

Co-sponsors of Girl Scout Troop #211 Smith and Rosalynd Lamphere are teaming-up with their daughters Kayla Smith and Samantha Lamphere, both 15, to spearhead the event.

To help support efforts, organizers of the Apopka First Responder Day will hold a special Bingo game fundraiser from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Apopka Elks Lodge No. 2422, 201 W. Orange St. The event will feature various games, drawings and prizes sponsored by local businesses such as Chick-fil-A, Miller’s Ale House, Sala’s Hawaiian Slurp Shack, Beef ‘O” Brady’s, Babbalou’s Bodacious Bar-B-Que, Pinch-A-Penny, McDonalds, and 5/3 Bank. Country Music star Patrick Gibson will be donating items from his recent tour which will be in Clermont on September 2nd.

Prizes include golfing packages, canoe trips and plenty of gift cards. This is the fourth year of Apopka First Responder Day. For more information, call (407) 923-1423 or visit their Facebook Page.

The following day, Apopka's 9-11 memorial ceremony will be held at 8 a.m. Sunday, September 11th, at the north steps of Apopka City Hall. Activities will recognize the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The event also will unveil Christian Lamphere's completed Eagle Scout project - a new 9-11 monument next to City Hall that will feature a piece of the original World Trade Center.
