Breaking news: Apopka police arrest hit and run driver

Apopka police officers have arrested a suspect in the early morning hit-and-run death of an Apopka resident according to the Apopka Police Department Public Information Office.

Carmen M. Clayton, 45 of Apopka, was arrested and charged with Hit and Run Failure to Stop and Remain at a Crash Involving Death.

On February 3rd, at approximately 3:29 AM a vehicle struck pedestrian Nikita Pope, 31, as she was crossing the northbound lanes of US Highway 441 at the intersection of Piedmont-Wekiva and Hiawassee. The vehicle left the scene. Pope was transported to Florida Hospital Apopka where she was pronounced deceased.

During the subsequent investigation, an Apopka resident contacted the APD and described a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood that appeared to have been involved in a crash. APD Traffic Homicide Investigators responded to the area and were able to determine the vehicle was the one that struck Pope.

Clayton has been transported to the Orange County Jail for processing.
