Matthew Arnold, Principal of Apopka HIgh School, sent this message to AHS parents:

” A truck caught on fire on the emergency access alley way behind the school.  We evacuated the school immediately and the fire department arrived quickly to put out the fire.  We have been able to get all students to lunch and school will continue as usual.”

A vehicle owned by a private contractor doing pressure washing for Apopka High School caught fire on the access road (back side) of AHS school property, according to Sgt. Kim Walsh, spokesperson for the Apopka Police Department. The fire was contained, and there was a partial evacuation of school building near the vehicle, but there were no injuries to AHS staff or students. The contractor suffered minor injuries as a result of the fire. Both APD, the Apopka Fire Department and EMS responded to the call.

This is a breaking story. The Apopka Voice will update as more details are known.

  1. I was sitting at the table and I heard sirens coming from everywhere up Martin. Then we heard helicopters and my husband went outside and said that there was some thick heavy black smoke pouring up in the air, and he thought it was a fire at the high school or maybe a house fire. When I went out there were two news helicopters hovering above my house, and we drove down by the school toward Vick, and I saw the emergency gate at the school open, and another news helicopter hovering over Errol. 3 helicopters in the air! Hope the person is not too badly injured and is okay.

  2. Looks like one of those high top service vans with the high center of gravity that you could stand up in, except you Commissioner Becker……LOL………is that a Nissan Van possibly? Picking on you again Kyle…..Kyle, I think I saw someone in Apopka taller than you, and he works at Lowes in the hardware section. He is as tall as you are Kyle, I am certain, but possibly taller than you.

  3. I was in the drive thru once waiting on food in my Pontiac Sunbird station wagon and my car started filling with smoke inside and it was coming from the back of the station wagon near the side. Long story short, it was the wiring harness burning!

  4. I have had some really bad experiences with vehicles. I traded one car in once and when I took it in to trade it was back firing terribly…..POW POW POW all the way up past 17-92. People were gawking at us, and thought someone was shooting at them! OMG! I was so darn glad to get rid of that car, and thankful that no one returned fire!!!!!!!! LOL……….

  5. If you view the video on Channel 35 Orlando the van looks like it is black in color. If you look at Channel 9 Orlando video it looks like a white van. The black smoke that was pouring up in the air sure changed the color of the vehicle! Looked like an expensive van, too.
