Blue Darters and Mustangs win big in spring jamborees

Posted

If spring football jamborees are any indication of what the 2018 high school football season will look like, expect both the Apopka Blue Darters and Wekiva Mustangs to return to the playoffs, and go deep into the postseason.

Both schools romped in their exhibition games this week, Wekiva downing Edgewater 24-7 and Apopka routing both Deltona Pine Ridge 42-13 and Orange City University 42-13 in separate halves of their jamboree.

Apopka runs wild with 12 touchdowns against Deltona Pine Ridge and Orange City University

It was a two-act offensive show that two schools from West Volusia County are unlikely to forget soon.

The Blue Darters ran wild in their opening game, with five different players finding the end zone as they routed Pine Ridge 35-7. Senior running back Cornelius Williams scored on a 16-yard run, sophomore running back Eric Wright caught a screen pass from junior quarterback Jackson Darlington and went 60 yards for a score, and junior running back Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton caught an 11-yard TD pass to cap the first quarter scoring.

Apopka added second-quarter touchdown runs from junior running back/wide receiver Akeem Brown and from Tyriq Cheatwood.

Darlington also completed all of his six passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the opening matchup.

After a five-touchdown beat down in game one, it would not be surprising to see a bit of a letdown in the second half of the Blue Darter's spring jamboree. However, Act II was even more of an offensive spectacle.

Junior running back Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton scored three times, twice on the ground including a spectacular 70-yard touchdown run and once from a 20-yard touchdown reception from Darlington, and the Blue Darters scored seven more touchdowns en route to a 42-13 victory over Orange City University.

Senior running back Cornelius Williams opened the half with a 63-yard TD run and then added a 7-yard TD run later in the game.

In total, the Blue Darters scored 12 touchdowns in the four quarters and outscored Pine Ridge and University by a combined score of 77-20. Don't expect any party invitations from West Volusia County anytime soon Blue Darters.

Wekiva defense is stifling in 24-7 win over Edgewater

On Wednesday, Wekiva senior quarterback Sean Robles passed for 205 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Mustangs to a 24-7 victory in spring jamboree football game against Edgewater High School.

The Mustangs, coming off a record-breaking 12-2 record and state semifinal finish last year, shut down the Eagle's offense - only allowing one touchdown the entire contest.

Senior Mustang running back Solomon Edgerton ran for 70 yards on 13 carries, but it was sophomore running back Jamari Jones that scored on a 3-yard touchdown run.

Editor's Note: All players listed as a sophomore, junior, or senior will be in that grade for the 2018 season.
