Blue Darters destroy Edgewater 78-0

Posted

8 straight touchdowns and a 64-0 halftime lead

And the beat goes on.

On a rainy night that only the most loyal of fans braved, the Apopka High School Blue Darters continued their offensive exploits with 64 first half points en route to blasting the hapless Edgewater Eagles 78-0. It was the second most points ever scored by an Apopka team, just missing the 80-point single game record.

The Blue Darters (2-0) scored touchdowns on their first eight possessions, including two defensive touchdowns in the first quarter.

The Eagles (0-2) were held without a first down until midway through the second quarter, and spent more time going backwards than forwards. Edgewater had -60 yards rushing in the game, which included several quarterback sacks.

Apopka was led again by senior quarterback Demetri Burch with two rushing touchdowns and a touchdown pass to senior running back Deshawn Massey. Jordan Thompson, a senior running back, added two rushing touchdowns, while sophomore running back Cornelius Williams had two rushing touchdowns in the second half.

Much like last week’s blowout over Ocoee, the Blue Darters scored quickly on the fourth play from scrimmage when Thompson broke free for a 46-yard touchdown run. On the next two series, the Apopka defense recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the end zone to take a 21-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.

Two minutes later, Burch hit Massey on a 5-yard touchdown pass… Two minutes after that, Burch scored on a 20-yard touchdown run.

At the end of the first quarter, Apopka led 35-0!

But as bad as the first quarter was for Edgewater, the second quarter wasn’t much better. Thompson scored his second touchdown from 35 yards out on the very first play of the second quarter. Massey scored on a 45 yard run with 8:07 left in the second quarter, and then had a 45-yard touchdown run called back on a holding penalty. However Burch scored from 55 yards out on the very next play from scrimmage. Add an Apopka quarterback sack for a safety, and a punt returned for a touchdown by junior Cayvian Holmes, and the Blue Darters went to the locker room up 64-0.

For the second straight week, the second half was played with a running (mercy) clock because of the score. Despite that Williams added two more touchdowns to round out the scoring.

The Blue Darters return home to Roger Williams Stadium to face DeLand High School next Friday, September 9th at 7pm. After the first two games of the season, Apopka has outscored its opponents 140-7!
