A cat, a horse and unreasonable expectations

Depending on a cat to clean its own litter box is just a tad beyond reasonable! It is the same with people.

If you imagine that you are going to change another person you are in for a big disappointment. I mean, we have difficulty changing ourselves so where do we get off with the idea that we can bring about transformation in others?

Talk about unrealistic expectations!

Unrealistic expectations, be they in a marriage, a friendship, or a business relationship, can be a strong indication that help is needed. I will never forget the time I discovered one of our horses bogged down in the river. He was belly deep in mud and about to go down in two feet of water which would have been the end for him because there was no way I would be able to rescue him by myself.

I took a short piece of rope from the boat, and rigging a hackamore, got in front of that beast and began pulling. My meager encouragement was all the horse needed. His eyes rolled, he snorted, lunged, and ran right over me. The next thing I knew I was on my back in two feet of water and another two feet of mud, with a hoof print in the center of my chest! When I was able to finally extricate myself the horse was disappearing up the river at very high speed.

He didn’t even stick around to rescue me, and I figured he would have appreciated my assistance! A pox on all horses.

Now I told that story to illustrate that we can help others, but there is little we can do to change them, be they horses or people. Horses and people get themselves into trouble and at times, more often than not, only God can rescue them.
