Apopka vs. Dr. Phillips in a battle of superlatives

Posted

Two undefeated dynasties meet at Roger Williams Field tonight

#1 vs. #2. The battle of the titans. A matchup of undefeateds.

You name the superlative and it describes Apopka vs. Dr. Phillips.

The Panthers (3-0) ranked #2 (on Joe Pinkos 8A state poll) travels to Roger Williams Field to take on the #1 (on the AP and the Pinkos 8A state polls) ranked Blue Darters (3-0) in a mid-season matchup that could be a preview of a playoff or state championship battle. The game is televised on the Brighthouse Sports Network at 7:30PM at the Apopka High School campus.

Last season Apopka rallied from a 20-6 halftime deficit to edge Dr. Phillips 22-20. Expect this year’s game to be no less exciting.

Apopka has overwhelmed its first three opponents by unthinkable pointspreads. The Blue Darters beat Ocoee 62-7, Edgewater 78-0 and DeLand 35-0. That’s a combined scoring margin of 175-7!Apopka High School Blue Darters Helmet

Senior quarterback Demetri Burch leads the Blue Darters illustrious offense, with nine touchdowns through the first three games. Burch has thrown for 155 yards and rushed for 291. Burch is at the front of a “four horseman” attack that includes Deshawn Massey (19 carries, 138 yards, and 4 dr-phillips-fltouchdowns), Cornelius Williams (18 carries, 131 yds, and 4 touchdowns) and Jordan Thompson(14 carries, 141 yards, and 2 touchdowns). It is a balanced offense that is accustomed to first round knockouts.

But DP has a reputation for defense - perhaps the best defense in Central Florida.

Dr. Phillips is coming off a dominating 40-3 victory over rival West Orange followed by victories over Wekiva (28-7) and Lake Mary 41-7 in the first two weeks. That’s a margin of 109-17, which includes four defensive and special teams touchdowns by defensive back, kick and punt returner specialist Tanner Ingle.

Apopka leads the all-time series 14-8.
