Apopka High School Senior Named OCPS Super Scholar

Posted

Apopka High School Senior September Porras is a girl with dreams, and one of them is about to be realized soon.

Porras was recently named a “Super Scholar” by The Orange County Public School system – the only one from AHS to receive that honor. The award goes to Seniors in Orange County who receive acceptance letters from the Top 20 schools in the United States – either the top 20 Liberal Arts, National Universities or U.S. Service Academies. Porras was accepted at Swarthmore College.

“I'm very honored to be named a Super Scholar,” she said. “Academic achievement is something that's always been very important to my family. My sister was named a super scholar when she was a senior at Apopka."

Porras was both active and successful at AHS. She was the Vice President of the Drama Club last year and the President this year. She is a member of the Debate team, National Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Society, and Secretary of the French Honor Society. She is also ranked 21st in her class with a GPA of 4.72.

She plans on majoring in “something along the lines of Political Science or Revolutionary History” at Swarthmore.

She was also recently named to The Apopka Task Force to fight violence. Not something most high school seniors would have an interest in, but Porras wants to help her community before she heads off to college.

“I’m very excited to be a part of a team that's concerned with the divide in Apopka both geographically and economically. I'm really hoping to provide some after-school recreation for students as well as being together with law enforcement and citizens.”

Swarthmore College is private liberal arts college located in Swarthmore, PA - 11 miles southwest of Philadelphia.

It has been called “a little Ivy,” meaning it has a reputation as an Ivy League caliber school. In its 2016 college ranking, US News and World Report ranked Swarthmore as the 3rd-best liberal arts college in the nation. Swarthmore has been ranked the number one liberal arts college in the country a total of six times (the most recent being in 2002).

"I'm very excited to be attending Swarthmore in the fall," said Porras. "It was my dream school and is now my reality.”
