Apopka routs Ocoee 62-7 in season opener

Blue Darters score TD's on 8 of first 9 possessions

Before an opening night crowd of over 2,000 supporters at Roger Williams Field, the Apopka High School Blue Darters Football team put on an offensive show in overwhelming the Ocoee Knights 62-7. The Blue Darters ran wild in the first half, led by senior quarterback Demetri Burch, who threw 2 touchdown passes (to Jackie Darlington and Damarus August) and ran for two more. Sophomore running back Cornelius Williams also ran for two scores as Apopka went to halftime leading by a stunning 50-7 score.

Because of the one-sided margin, the second half was played with a "running clock", which happens when the score reaches a point differential of 42 or more at halftime or any point thereafter, and the game is played with a clock that continues to run except during time outs, which ends a one-sided affair faster. It's also called the "mercy rule".

But Apopka was showing Ocoee no mercy in the first half.

On the second play from scrimmage, Birch ran 37 yards for a touchdown, and Massey added a 2 point conversion run to give the Darters an 8-0 lead that they never gave back. Before the end of the first quarter, Birch hit Darlington for a 14 yard touchdown pass, and sophomore kicker Collin Proctor added the extra point to give Apopka a 15-0 lead at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, things got very ugly for Ocoee as Apopka ran off five straight touchdowns.

On defense the Darters only allowed one touchdown, while forcing two turnovers - a fumble recovery by junior outside linebacker Kamron Williams and a tipped pass interception by junior cornerback Cayvian Holmes. Both turnovers led to Apopka touchdowns.

The Blue Darters (1-0), who opened the season in high-flying fashion, will travel to College Park to face the Edgewater Eagles next week, Friday September 2nd at 7pm. Edgewater is coached by former University of Florida Quarterback Chris Leak, who won a national championship in his senior season with the Gators in 2007.
