Monday Morning Quarterback

West Orange 30, Wekiva 29

The West Orange Warriors overcame a 29-14 fourth quarter deficit to score 16 straight points including a field goal in the final seconds to shock the Wekiva Mustangs 30-29. It was the first loss of the season for Wekiva, currently ranked first in the Associated Press 8A Top 10 poll. The loss drops the Mustangs to 4-1 and 0-1 in District 8A-4.

The Warriors (5-1 and 1-0 in District 8A-4) were able to force four turnovers on the Mustangs and posted 218 yards of offense in the second half after being held to just 18 yards in the first half.

Wekiva junior running back Supreme Richardson led all rushers with 143 yards and two touchdowns.

Wekiva returns to action this Friday, October 5th to play defending state champion Dr. Phillips.

Apopka 52, Evans 14

Junior running back Akeem Brown established himself as the lead running back with his second straight game going over 200 yards and multiple touchdowns as the Apopka Blue Darters blew open an 8-point game midway through the third quarter with 30 unanswered points and cruised to a 52-14 victory over the Evans Trojans.

Brown, who ran for 203 yards and five touchdowns last week against Boone, matched that performance with 225 yards and three touchdowns against the Trojans.

Evans (1-4 and 0-1 in District 8A-4), took advantage of four fumbles by Apopka to keep the game close, even clawing back into a one-possession game with a touchdown midway through the third quarter to cut the Blue Darter lead to 22-14.

But then the floodgates opened for the Trojans.

Brown scored on a spectacular 46-yard touchdown run to close the third quarter scoring, and then again on a 15-yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter, which gave Apopka a 36-14 lead.

The Blue Darter defense also got into the scoring, with a fourth-quarter safety and a 33-yard interception return by sophomore linebacker Jaquan Lowman.

The victory was the third straight for Apopka, now 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in district play.

Their next game is at home against Jacksonville Mandarin this Friday, October 5th.
