Apopka Police Officer Receives LEO Award

On Tuesday May 24, 2016, the Greater Orlando Chapter of ASIS International hosted their 19th annual Law Enforcement Appreciation luncheon (LEO Awards) at the Rosen Plaza Hotel on International Drive. The association recognizes outstanding law enforcement officers from the Central Florida area.

This year, Officer Barry Brown, of the Apopka Police Department, was one of the local professionals chosen to receive an award for saving the life of a fellow officer.

On December 15th, 2015, Officer Barry Brown was working an off duty assignment at the Sam's Club in Apopka. During his assignment, Officer Brown was approached by a fellow officer who was choking on food. The officer appeared to Officer Brown to be in distress and was indicating with his hands that he was choking and unable to breathe. Officer Brown took immediate action and performed the Heimlich maneuver.

Officer Brown’s quick thinking helped to dislodge the obstruction, allowing the officer to once again breathe freely. Officer Brown’s timely response averted what could have quickly become a tragic and/or deadly situation.

The annual LEO Awards event draws nearly 600 attendees, including elected officials, chief’s, sheriffs, command staff and officers from the four counties around Orlando and Officer Brown’s selection was a high honor not only for him, but the Apopka Police Department as well.
