Apopka Police Encourage Seat Belt Use

Of all the features of your motor vehicle, the safety belt is probably the most important, and the most useless if you fail to buckle up. This sounds simple, but it is important for your safety and the safety of the passengers within your vehicle.

The Apopka Police Department is partnering with the Florida Highway Patrol and other local agencies in raising awareness in the use of seatbelts in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign that runs May 23 through June 5. Buckling up is critical to avoid unnecessary injuries and death.

In Florida, any passenger within a motor vehicle under the age of 18 must be restrained by a safety belt or by a child restraint device. In the front seat, the operator and passengers must be restrained. Passengers 18 years or older may be charged with a violation if they fail to wear a seat belt and drivers may be charged with a seat belt violation if any passenger under the age of 18 is not restrained with a seat belt or child restraint device.

Modern vehicles have supplemental restraint devices (airbags, etc.) that have been instrumental in reducing death and injury to the traveling public. However, only seatbelts will keep you from being ejected from the vehicle or being thrown into other passengers or the windshield. Additionally, properly used seatbelts will keep you behind the wheel, often preventing loss of control. There is no substitute for using the seatbelt.

Wearing a seat belt in Florida is a primary offense, meaning officers can stop a vehicle when they witness drivers and passengers failing to use them.

In conjunction with Click It or Ticket Apopka police officers will be out in force over Memorial Day week-end to strictly enforce DUI and criminal traffic laws, including seat belt violations. Safe driving habits are learned, buckle up.

No matter how short the trip, there is no substitute for seat belts and safety.
