STORM DEBRIS CLEANUP CONTINUES – BULK COLLECTION CATCHES UP

The second, city-wide pass of hurricane debris collection is almost half-way complete and likely will continue through next week in a joint effort of city workers and private contractors. Bucket trucks are nearly finished cutting damaged or hanging limbs above or around city streets. Once the second pass is completed, the private contractors will focus on removing large tree trunks and stumps from the sides of city roads and assisting with clearing leaves from clogged storm drains.

So far, the city has collected an estimated 120,000 cubic yards of storm debris that has been hauled to a vacant part of the Northwest Recreation Complex. The city will begin burning the debris next week utilizing air curtains to speed up the process and to reduce smoke and odor. Burning also will save an estimated $700,000 over the cost of chipping and hauling away the debris.

Residents with a large amount of storm debris remaining to be collected should contact Apopka’s Public Services Department at (407) 703-1731. Storm debris should be placed at the curb as soon as possible to be included in the hurricane cleanup. Debris should not include healthy tree removal or land clearing.

Please put loose leaves or twigs in bags or containers for bulky curbside collection. Because of the large demand, city yard waste crews are completing Friday’s routes to clear bags and cans, bulky waste and any remaining debris or hanging limbs that may have been left behind in that area. On Monday, the city likely will start yard waste collections again in Debris Zone 1 (see attached map), continuing to make a clean sweep behind the contractor as they complete second pass through the city.
