Revised plans for Alonzo Williams Park highlights City Council Meeting

Posted

A second look at the plans for the Community Center at Alonzo Williams Park will be the featured item at the City Commission meeting today at 1:30pm.

The Engineering/Design Company CH2M Hill presented a design proposal to the Council for the Community Center building at the December 16th meeting. At that time several suggestions were made by the public, the City Commission and the City Staff to be incorporated into the design.

At today's meeting, CH2Ml Hill will present a second design that incorporates these suggestions and also stays within the parameters of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) the City of Apopka seeks to build the Community Center. The estimated construction costs of the first design was $974,000, the altnative design is $750,000.

According to the City's informational packet/agenda for the meeting, the CDBG deadline is March of 2016, which means the Commission will need to approve a design soon in order to include it with the grant proposal.

The park is named after Alonzo Williams, Apopka's first black City Commissioner and the first to oversee the Parks and Recreation Department. He served on the city council from 1970-1996.
