40,000 cubic yards of debris collected in Apopka

HURRICANE IRMA STORM DEBRIS UPDATE

Trucks and trailers are working across Apopka, with a newly expanded capacity of collecting up to 8,000 cubic yards of Hurricane Irma storm debris each day.

Two new, double-loader vehicles began work in Apopka on Wednesday, bringing the total number of debris collection vehicles to six double-loaders and one single-loader. These vehicles are operated by the City’s outside storm debris contractor.

Nearly 40,000 cubic yards have been collected so far by three city claw trucks and the outside contractor’s seven trucks. The contractor expects another double-loader truck to arrive next week, helping to accelerate clean-up work. Also, up to six new bucket trucks are scheduled to arrive next week to focus on hard-to-reach, damaged or hanging tree limbs.

Crews currently are working in Rock Springs Ridge, Wekiva Glen, Pines of Wekiva, Sheeler Oaks and Piedmont Lakes. The City of Apopka has an estimated 200,000 cubic yards of storm debris remaining.

As a result of these large vehicles needed for debris removal, residents are asked to follow these guidelines:

• Please make every effort to keep the street clear of parked cars when debris crews are in your area.

• Please help to keep storm drains clear. Residents can help aid the debris collection by sweeping up loose leaves and debris after each pass.

• Please place debris between the curb and the sidewalk. Avoid placing debris in the street, near mailboxes, fire hydrants, or on top of water mains or electric transformers or underneath power lines or cable wires.

• Please keep hurricane tree debris in its own pile.

• Please keep bagged leaves & debris, construction debris, fencing, furniture, appliances or anything else separated from hurricane tree debris piles. This will help with the disposal process.
