16-year-old dies in one car crash on Ponkan Road in Apopka

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a one-car-crash on or near the intersection of Ponkan Road and Golden Gem Road in Apopka Thursday afternoon that resulted in one death and four injuries.

According to the report, the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Ponkan Road, and for an unknown reason the driver lost control and struck the curb. The car traveled across the westbound lanes and left the roadway. The side of the vehicle struck a power pole and overturned.

According to the FHP, five boys ages 14-19 were in the vehicle when it hit the pole. Their injuries ranged from minor to critical, and a 16-year-old boy, who was a passenger, died as a result of his injuries.

All four of the injured passengers were transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
